History

Petersham Country Club was crafted in 1922 by a gentleman known to many as the person who brought golf to America. Donald Ross, born in Scotland is responsible for designing over 300 courses in the United States.

Construction of the course began in October 1922. Originally, the course would be built on both sides of Route 32. But, a deal was struck and a land swap made with a neighbor, Mrs. Wielder so the nine holes could be built on the East side of Route 32, and golfers would not have to cross the road. Trees were cut, stone walls removed and boulders blasted. A barn was razed and the farmhouse on the land was remodled into a clubhouse with plumbing, and showers for members.

On opening day, July 4, 1924, a tournament was played open to all members and a prize was presented by the President of the club. At that time greens fees were $2 a day or $10 a week for members. Today, there are over 200 members at Petersham Country Club who enjoy the comfortable atmosphere the course offers.

Over the years some changes have been made to the course, a couple of the greens have been moved and reshaped, however, the 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th putting greens have never been touched. New tees have been added for women and men.
